I read a rather enlightening article written by Craig Elimeliah about the differences between art and design. I take both a design class and a drawing class this semester, and whenever I've asked what the difference was, I've found it difficult to respond with certainty. After reading the article, however, I'm confident that I'll be able to answer that question clearly!
According to Elimeliah, design is more like following a list of instructions or rules in order to achieve a certain desired goal. Art is coming up with new ideas and new ways of creating without being really influenced by techniques already used in the past, because doing so would be design.
Where design is construction, art is imagination.
Design is making, and art is creating.
